NKU Picks Up Win #5 in OT Thriller at Stetson
DeLAND, Fla. – Overtime means winning time for Northern Kentucky on the basketball court.
The Norse improved to 3-0 this season in overtime games with a 67-65 victory at Stetson on Wednesday night. Jake Giesler's follow-up basket with 1.2 seconds remaining gave Northern Kentucky the winning points.
Giesler grabbed an offensive rebound with time running down and followed with a layup to snap a 65-all tie and give Northern Kentucky (5-9 overall, 1-1 Atlantic Sun Conference) the road victory. Stetson's Willie Green missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer, sealing the win for the Norse.
"Our guys kept battling, and we forced a big turnover on the inbounds play right before Jake's shot," Norse head coach Dave Bezold said. "I thought we executed very well the entire game, played good defense and pulled out a tough road win. This is three overtime wins, and that says a great deal about the players and their toughness."
Northern Kentucky also owns overtime wins against Tulane and Hampton this season.
Jordan Jackson scored 13 points to lead the Norse, who are now 1-2 all-time against Stetson (3-11 overall, 1-1 Atlantic Sun Conference). Jalen Billups and Tyler White each added 12 points, with White also dishing out five assists.
Stetson built an 18-9 lead early in the first half, but Northern Kentucky responded with a 14-6 run to cut the Hatter advantage to 24-23. Deontae Cole's 3-pointer late in the first half evened the score at 30-all. Cole sparked Northern Kentucky with six points off the bench before halftime.
The Norse scored the first six points of the second half to build a 36-30 lead and still owned a 58-55 advantage with just more than a minute remaining. Raymone Andrews, however, buried a 3-pointer to tie the game at 58-all, and both teams missed chances in the final seconds to force overtime.
Northern Kentucky scored the first five points of the extra session, but Stetson battled back and tied the score at 63-all. Billups converted a pair of free throws with 1:51 left to give the Norse the lead, but Green tied the game with a short jumper.
Stetson had possession of the ball with just 11.1 seconds remaining, but the Hatters turned the ball over on the inbounds pass. White attempted a 3-pointer from the right corner that was long, but Giesler grabbed the miss and scored the winning basket. Giesler finished with seven points and seven rebounds.
Daniel Camps grabbed eight rebounds and added six points for the Norse, who won the battle on the boards 37-35. Green and Kentwan Smith scored 16 points apiece to lead Stetson.
