Latonia Street Evacuated After Discovery of Suspicious Substance

The discovery of a suspicious substance in a trash can forced the Covington Fire Department to evacuate Eureka Street in Latonia late Friday afternoon.

The substance, described by one fire official as possibly meth-like, was found in a Gatorade bottle in the trash can in front of a residence.

After further review by a specialist brought in from another agency, more of the substance was found in the trash and as of 6 p.m. more emergency responders are being brought in, Covington Fire Batallion Chief Eric Matheny said.

"We're going to be here a while," Matheny told nearby residents.

Eureka Street is closed between 46th & 47th Streets. The home on Eureka where the substance was found is closer to 46th St but 47th St. may be shut down if more emergency vehicles arrive. That is the route to the VFW hall where a birthday party is scheduled, causing concern for guests headed that way.

This story will be updated when more information is available.
