Michael Connett, Former Covington Commission Candidate & Frequent Online Commenter, Dies

A former candidate for Covington City Commission and consistent online advocate for HIV awareness in Northern Kentucky has passed away.

Michael Connett, 59, died at his home on Friday.

A native of Dayton, Kentucky, Connett made his home in Covington where he was a frequent commenter on social networks and producer of YouTube videos in which he primarily focused on HIV/AIDS and poverty topics. He was open about his HIV-positive status and his being a low-income renter.

In 2010, he ran for Covington City Commission but was eliminated in the 15-candidate primary when the field was narrowed to eight.

According to his obituary, posted online, a memorial mass is scheduled for Wednesday at the St. Bernard Church in Dayton at 6:30 p.m. He is survived by his mother, Kathleen Connett of Fort Thomas, brothers Charles Connett of Alexadnria and Frank Connett of Cincinnati, and sisters Marcie Abbatiello of Alexandria, Mary Church of Sardinia, Ohio, and Katy Valentine of West Chester, Ohio.

Connett's final personal post on Facebook indicated that he had just lost his apartment on West Tenth Street. His online comments on social media were often related to housing issues and referenced his being a Section-8 tenant at various apartments in Covington over the years. "It has dawned on me this weekend, that with the judgment against me last Thursday, I'm now a 3 time loser as a low-income renter," Connett wrote on May 27. "I have no ideas and can't think of any resources I may be able to access at this time and I'm feeling miserable in body, mind and spirit. I must have my things packed up and out of here no later than Thursday evening. If you can help in any way, I'd appreciate it..."

His obituary indicated that he died at his home a week later. No cause of death was stated.

Connett was a frequent commenter at The River City News Facebook page and all of us at RCN send our condolences to his family and friends.
