Downed Tree Snarls Traffic in Historic District

Lunchtime traffic was made difficult in Covington's Licking Riverside Historic District following the partial collapse of a large tree.

The tree split down the middle and fell eastward, resting upon power lines and blocking the 400 block of Garrard Street.

That blockage caused backups along Garrard Street at Fourth Street where drivers either head west towards Covington or the interstate, or east towards Newport across the Fourth Street Bridge. Traffic was backed up on Third Street between Greenup and Garrard Streets just as the post-lunch rush back to the office was in full swing.

The biggest problem may be for drivers heading north on Greenup who may typically take Fifth Street to Garrard Street in order to access the Fourth Street Bridge. Those drivers are being rerouted to Third Street, causing much of the back-up.

Fourth Street was still open but traffic was moving slowly approaching the east or west option.

Crews from Covington Police and Duke Energy were on the scene.

The road opened later in the afternoon.
