Covington Educator is Social Studies Teacher of the Year

Tiffany Gruen, a teacher at John G. Carlisle Elementary School, has been selected as the Elementary Social Studies Teacher of the Year for 2014-2015 by the Kentucky Council for Social

“Ms. Gruen is a shining example of a teacher dedicated to her students, her profession, and the civic community at large,’’ said Laureen Laumeyer, chairperson of the council’s awards committee. “Her commitment proves that social studies is important to teach at every level of education. She is training the future leaders of tomorrow.’’

The selection process include a teacher’s impact on student achievement, letters of recommendations and involvement in local, state and national endeavors to promote the study of social studies.

Ms. Gruen has been a teacher in Covington Independent Public Schools for 10 years. She is a member of the Social Studies Regional Network, a member of the state Social Studies Standards Writing Team and she also helped to implement the Teaching American History grant in Covington Schools.

Ms. Gruen loves teaching. She sees a classroom of future leaders and teaches them as such.

“There is nothing that I enjoy more than watching a group of students grapple with and solve the issues that we face every day,’’ she said. “These students will one day solve the problems of today and they need to be prepared to handle such a responsibility. I see these students as future city commissioners, school board members and members of Congress. In whatever facet they choose, these students are our future leaders of Covington. It is my job to prepare them for such a responsibility.’’

Ms. Gruen will be recognized at the council’s annual luncheon on Wednesday, September 24 at the METS Center 3861 Olympic Boulevard, Erlanger, Kentucky.
