Newport Street Sign Dedicated, Commemorating Name Change
A new sign was dedicated at Liberty Street in Newport on Saturday.
The sign commemorates the fact that the street was previously known as German Street before the outbreak of World War I and the onset of anti-German hysteria.
The German-American Citizens League of Greater Cincinnati led the effort to place the sign there as the organization did at Pershing Street in Coivngton which was previously known as Bremen Street.
During Saturday's ceremony in Newport, Marge Heinemann Poole, a Newport native, spoke of the significance of the new signs for her and her family.
