These 5 Northern Kentucky Restaurants are Featured in New "Back Roads" Cookbook

Five Northern Kentucky restaurants are featured in the new Kentucky Back Road Restaurant Recipes cookbook, newly released by Great American Publishers.

Author Anita Musgrove was inspired to write the book after many food trips with her husband. When he passed away a few years ago, she got to work and has completed Back Road books about Kentucky and Alabama is currently working on Tennessee.

"We'd ride the back roads of our country and see the wonders of God. We both loved to see the sunrise, the sunset, and we have a love of only eating at locally-owned restaurants and we realized there is not a good guide out there for what you call mom and pop restaurants," Musgrove told The River City News. "If you happen to run into a local, they would say, you just passed the very best fish house you could ever eat at. But the locals know all these nice, unique gems hidden out on the back roads of our country."

Musgrove and her husband were married forty-six years when she lost him to cancer three years ago. She hooked up with Great American Publishers soon after. A lot of ground is covered in the book -- there are restaurants featured from every corner of the Commonwealth, and no, Musgrove has not yet visited all of them. "If I did, I'd waddle more than I do now," she laughed.

"I visited through phone calls and emails and have learned to love every one of our customers in our book," Musgrove said. "They might have started out as a phone call and they all ended up as friends."

From Northern Kentucky, Musgrove shares recipes from Piper's Cafe in Covington (chicken sausage gravy), York Street Cafe in Newport, Colonial Cottage in Erlanger, Yesterday's Cafe & Tea Room in Florence, and Family's Main Street Cafe in Walton.

To scout the locations featured in the book, Musgrove would find solid sources in local school secretaries and teachers, as well as city officials, police and firemen, and members of local tourism boards and chambers of commerce.

She hopes that readers find a rekindled love for local restaurants and patronizes them more frequently. "We're not looking at a group of people looking for their exotic second home on some island, we're dealing with people who are paying their mortgages, paying their rent, tuition, ballet lessons, football and baseball dues, the down-to-earth people this world was created on," Musgrove said. "We want to bring the business back, pull the people off the highways and get the coming back to our favorite locally owned places. Not only will they visit the restaurants, they'll bring their business into the little small cities and small shops."

Kentucky Back Road Restaurant Recipes retails for $18.95 and is available at bookstores and online.
