The Boone County Sheriff is stepping down.
But... he plans to return.
Sheriff Michael Helmig informed Boone County Judge-Executive Gary Moore that he has stepped down effective Sunday but that he will return to be sworn in again in January. Helmig was reelected in November and faced no opposition.
Helmig said he will serve his next term.
Per Kentucky statute, Moore has appointed Les Hill as Sheriff to serve the remainder of the unexpired term. Colonel Hill, a veteran of more than twenty-five years with the Boone County Sheriff’s Office and the department’s Chief Deputy, was sworn in on Sunday. “Les Hill is highly qualified to lead our Sheriff’s Department because of his experience, his commitment to public service and his long tenure as a member of the Sheriff’s senior management team”, Moore said in a news release.
