A Florence Police officer shot and killed a drug suspect Tuesday morning and suffered a head injury at the Super 8 Motel on Dream Street.

Captain Tom Grau told reporters on the scene that officers responded to a room at the motel after receiving a report of drug activity. When an officer knocked on the door of the room in question, a suspect pulled a gun and opened fire. An officer was able to return fire, killing one suspect.

The officer suffered a laceration to his face, possibly the result of being grazed by a bullet.

"At this time our officer did sustain a minor injury where he is being looked at and treated right now," Grau said.

The Florence Police Department, Boone County Sheriff's Department, and SWAT Team responded to the scene and just before 1 p.m., officers were searching rooms in the motel but Grau said that the scene was secured.

The identity of the injured officer was not immediately released.
