Investigation: Covington Teen Fired at Florence Officer Then Killed Self
The person who fired at a Florence Police officer at the Super 8 Motel on Dream Street was a 16-year old Covington boy, police said Wednesday.
Additionally, police said, the boy did not die from a wound suffered at the hands of an officer, but rather shot himself.
On Thursday afternoon, the Florence Police identified the boy as Richard Lee Patton.
Florence Police Lt. Roger Allen responded to a report of drug use in a room at the troubled motel when the teen opened fire on him. Allen was able to take cover and return fire, Florence Police said Tuesday evening adding that the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Police did not say Tuesday that the suspect had taken his own life or that he was a juvenile.
Tuesday's shootout prompted the Florence Police, Boone County Sheriff's Office, and the SWAT Team to respond to the scene.
Allen was taken to a Cincinnati hospital where he was treated and released for a minor head injury suffered in the shootout.
The Boone County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation.
Meanwhile, the Super 8 remains closed and more than two dozen residents of the establishment are being assisted by the Red Cross, according to media reports.
