High School Basketball Notes: Holmes Outlasts Chicago Team in Overtime, Holy Cross Survives
Holmes salvaged a win at the King of the Bluegrass Showcase at Fairdale after losing the previous two nights by outlasting Chicago De La Salle in double overtime 73-70 on Monday night.
The Bulldogs were defeated by Bullitt East on Saturday and Ballard on Sunday, but got quality contributions from their senior leaders to power them to their fifth win of the year.
Senior center Rod Avery racked up 20 points and also had seven rebounds, and distributed the ball nicely with six assists. Avery got help from senior guard James “Beetle” Bolden who had 19 points, six rebounds and five assists and Markel McClendon who totaled 18 points, six rebounds and six assists. Bolden and McClendon each had two-three pointers on the evening.
The game was close all the way through, as Holmes had built only a four-point halftime lead, and ended up with one less rebound and two more assists than Chicago De La Salle.
The Bulldogs are now 5-3 on the season and play Collegiate at the Lloyd Memorial Tournament on Saturday.
Holy Cross 53, Bishop Brossart 50
Holy Cross earned their sixth win of the season on Monday as they defeated Bishop Brossart 53-50 at home. The Indians got a leading hand from Leighton Schrand who had a team-high 18 points, six rebounds and four assists while forward Tyler Bezold added 11 points. Jared Seibert added 10 points for the Indians.
Holy Cross travels to Ashland to play Ashland Blazer on Saturday.
Grant County 69, Lloyd 50
Lloyd fell to 2-6 on the year after dropping another game to Grant County on Monday. Senior center Austin Schneider was the high man for the Braves with 17 points and eight rebounds. Junior guard Jordan Rose contributed 11 points.
Senior guard Hayden Molitor was the top scorer for the Juggernauts with 11 points.
