Girls Basketball: Holy Cross Upsets Holmes, Ends Undefeated Streak
After cruising to an undefeated 18-0 record, the Holmes Bulldogs suffered its first stumble on Thursday night.
Another top girls team in the Ninth Region, the Indians of Holy Cross, came to Holmes and pulled off the upset in front of a packed house.
Holy Cross knocked Holmes out of its usual rhythm early with a solid defense that prevented good shots. Holy Cross jumped out to a 4-0 advantage and never gave up the lead.
By the third quarter, the Indians were up by 16.
The girls from Holmes rallied with strong pressure defense and aggressive offense late in the game. Turnovers allowed the Bulldogs back in the game, cutting the lead to 3 at the end of the third quarter. With just over two minutes left to play, Holmes was within 2 and had three possessions to tie the game but never got a good look at the basket.
Holmes shot just 29% from the field in the loss.
Holy Cross improves to 15-3 on the season while Holmes drops to 18-1. The Indians face a tough Highlands squad on Saturday at home while the Bulldogs face Newport.
