Photos: In Battle of Elite Girls Teams, Holy Cross Edges Highlands in 2 OTs
The Holy Cross Indians ran the girls basketball gauntlet this week and came out unscathed.
On Thursday, the Indians upset previously undefeated Holmes and then on Saturday emerged victorious at home after a double overtime battle with Highlands, a team that has now lost just twice on the season.
The game got off to a fast start before both teams started to struggle to find the basket. The Bluebirds jetted out to a 10-0 lead and the Indians had just two points by the end of the first quarter.
By halftime, Highlands led 23-14.
In the second half, Highlands had trouble scoring. Holy Cross outscored the Bluebirds 14-2 in the third quarter, taking their first lead of the game.
The fourth quarter featured some clutch three-point shooting from both sides that put the game into overtime with a tie score of 35.
One overtime would not be enough as each team scored four points, sending the game into double overtime, tied 39-39.
Just one point would be scored in the additional period and Holy Cross came out with the win, 40-39.
Highlands's Brianna Adler led all scorers with 17 while Holy Cross was led by Dajah McClendon who put up 15.
