Photos: Man Dead, Woman Injured After Police Chase Ends in Bellevue
A police pursuit of a stolen car ended in death Tuesday evening.
A vehicle stolen in Russell Springs, Kentucky was spotted in Newport where police began to pursue it, Bellevue Police Chief Wayne Turner told The River City News. When the vehicle attempted to speed through the intersection of Fairfield Avenue and Berry Avenue where the light had turned red, the male driver slammed into another car pulling out from the bank at that corner.
A 70-year old woman leaving the bank was injured and was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital Fort Thomas, and the suspect in the stolen vehicle was killed when the car ended up wrapped around a utility pole. The suspect was from Cincinnati, according to Turner.
The utilities attached to the pole were live and the crash created a series of loud explosions leading some to believe that gunshots had been fired. Turner said that there was no gunfire.
Bellevue Police are handling the collision investigation while Newport Police are handling the criminal investigation.
Further details are expected to be released by Newport Police later Tuesday night.
