Basketball District Notes: St. Henry Ousts Lloyd; Holmes, Holy Cross Girls Advance
St. Henry ousted Lloyd from the 34th District tournament, 61-52, in first-round action on Tuesday night at Villa Madonna.
St. Henry guard Adam Goetz was the story of the game as he poured in 31 points on the evening and helped pace the Crusaders to a relatively easy victory to move ahead to the District final on Friday against the winner of Dixie-Ludlow.
St. Henry was the bigger team and to try to counter the size differential, Lloyd opted to play zone in hopes of occupying the paint. While they were successful neutralizing the inside points and rebounds, they left Goetz open for jumpers which he consistently knocked down. If it wasn't Goetz on the outside, it was center Conner Kunstek manufacturing points on put-backs and mid-range jump shots. The tandem combined for 24 first half points and pushed the Crusaders out in front early.
Lloyd, on the other hand, simply couldn't find an offensive rhythm. It seemed like sophomore guard Sterling Hamilton might be able to keep the Juggernauts in the game early on with five points out of the gate, but he went cold from the outside and couldn't get it going again until it was too late. He still finished with a team-high 17 points.
His teammate, guard Lashunn Townsend, was another one that at times looked impossible to guard, getting to the hoop at will, but a series of turnovers slowed the pace.
After halftime, Lloyd switched to man-to-man and managed a quick 8-0 run to make it a one-possession game as the broad-shouldered Elijah Jouett found some success working in the post. The brief momentum that they had enjoyed, however, seemed to dissipate after another turnover when the Juggernauts failed to inbound the ball.
Lloyd never got that close again.
From that moment, St. Henry went on a 22-6 run and buried Lloyd's season for good. Only four Crusaders scored in the game, and senior Paul Wallenhorst was shut out altogether, but Goetz's 31 and Kunstek's 16 was more than enough to make up the difference.
