The Match-Ups: Basketball Regional Tournament Pairings Announced

The Road to Rupp begins next week for local boys basketball teams in the regional tournaments while the girls' teams will fight for a bid to play in the Swweet 16 at Western Kentucky.

Draws for the 9th and 10th Region boys tournaments were announced Saturday. The 8th Region, featuring Simon Kenton, will be announced Sunday afternoon. The girls match-ups in all three regions were announced Saturday.

9TH REGION BOYS - GAMES PLAYED AT BANK OF KENTUCKY CENTER

Wednesday, March 4

Covington Catholic (26-5) vs. Newport (14-16), 6:30 p.m.

Cooper (18-8) vs. St. Henry (19-12), 8 p.m.

Friday, March 6

Dixie (22-7) vs. Boone County (20-11), 6:30 p.m.

Newport Central Catholic (28-3) vs. Holmes (21-8), 8 p.m.

Sunday: Semifinals, noon and 1:30.

Monday: Finals, 7.

Notes: The 9th Region tournament will be especially challenging for the winner as five teams have at least 20 or more wins on the year. It's most likely that the finals will see a pairing of Cov Cath against New Cath but Dixie, Holmes and Boone County are all legitimate threats as well.

10TH REGION BOYS - GAMES PLAYED AT MASON CO.

Wednesday, March 4

Campbell County (22-9) vs. Bourbon County (9-18), 6 p.m.

Pendleton County (14-16) vs. Augusta (20-10), 7:30 p.m.

Friday, March 6

Mason County (27-2) vs. Harrison County (15-14), 6 p.m.

Scott (16-13) vs. Paris (18-9) 7:30 p.m.

Monday: Semifinals, 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday: Finals, 7 p.m.

Notes: Campbell County has their center Matt Wilson back from an ankle injury and he and Deandre Jackson form a nice one-two punch for the Camels as they head into 10th Region play. Mason County has only lost twice all season and should prove to be quite a task for Scott should the Eagles advance past Paris in their first-round game.

9TH REGION GIRLS - GAMES PLAYED AT BANK OF KENTUCKY CENTER

Monday, March 2

Holy Cross (26-3) vs. St. Henry (15-15), 6:30 p.m.

Highlands (29-3) vs. Boone County (17-13), 8 p.m.

Tuesday, March 3

Ryle (15-11) vs. Holmes (28-2), 6:30 p.m.

Dixie (15-13) vs. Newport Central Catholic (20-12), 8 p.m.

Saturday: Semifinals, 7 and 8:30.

Sunday: Finals, 8.

Notes: Holmes, Holy Cross, and Highlands are three bona fide state-contenders, but only one will make it out of the 9th Region. Holy Cross and Highlands are expected to meet in the semifinals with Holmes likely waiting on the winner in the final game. Whoever emerges as champion will have certainly earned their place in the state tournament.

10TH REGION GIRLS - GAMES PLAYED AT GEORGE ROGERS CLARK

Monday, March 2

Mason County (28-11) vs. Bourbon County (18-11), 6 p.m.

Campbell County (23-12) vs. Robertson County (16-11), 7:45 p.m.

Tuesday, March 3

George Rogers Clark (19-10) vs. Augusta (14-12), 6 p.m.

Harrison County (10-20) vs. Scott (19-9), 7:45 p.m.

Friday: Semifinals, 6 and 7:45.

Saturday: Finals, 7.

Notes: Campbell County has a good shot in advancing to the state if they can get past Mason County in the likely semifinal game on Friday. Scott also looks like a contender in the region with their 19 wins tied with George Rogers Clark as the most in the lower portion of the bracket.

8TH REGION GIRLS - GAMES PLAYED AT CARROLL COUNTY

Monday, March 2

Trimble County (18-9) vs. Anderson County (17-12), 6 p.m.

Gallatin County (19-8) vs. Walton-Verona (15-13), 8 p.m.

Tuesday, March 3

Shelby County (25-5) vs. Carroll County (11-16), 6 p.m.

Simon Kenton (24-4) vs. Oldham County (13-16), 8 p.m.

Notes: The luck of the draw landed the top two teams in the region in the same half of the bracket, meaning that Shelby County and Simon Kenton could face off in the semifinals. Anderson County beat the Pioneers of SK in the finals last year when those two schools had the region's best teams.
