Bezold Out as Head Basketball Coach at Northern Kentucky
There will be a new head basketball coach in Highland Heights next season.
Longtime coach Dave Bezold is out as leader of the Northern Kentucky Norse men's basketball program, athletics director Ken Bothof said Monday.
“This is difficult given Dave’s role in our university and our community,” said Bothof. “Dave is a good man and has given much of himself to the development of the young men in our basketball program. I am grateful for his service and wish him and his family well.”
NKU just completed its third year of the four-year transitional period to Division I with a record of 13-17. It has had three consecutive losing seasons as an NCAA Division I program, after many years as one of the top programs in NCAA Division II.
A national search for a new coach will begin immediately, Bothof said.
Bezold replaced legendary Norse coach Ken Shields, for whom he served as an assistant, and led his first team in 2004-05. As a head coach in Division II, Bezold led the Norse to a record of 161-79 in 8 seasons. In 3 seasons in Division I, the Norse are 33-54. NKU has one more transitional season before it is eligible to compete in the NCAA Tournament.
