Investigation Underway at Sims Furniture Building Following Fire
Investigators have returned to the scene of a late night fire in Downtown Covington.
The building that houses Sims Furniture, Jackson Hewitt tax services, Denny Heglin Music & Pawn, and Step N Out dance studio caught fire late Thursday night. While the fire damage appeared to be minimal from the outside, there was heavy smoke throughout the three hours that firefighters from several departments were on the scene.

That smoke has likely damaged a lot of the inventory at Sims, a staple of Downtown Covington since the 1970's. A fire official on the scene told The River City News on Friday morning that there is five inches of water in the basement.
During Thursday's fire, Jackson Hewitt appeared to be most impacted by smoke from the fire that was mostly contained to a garage area on the 8th Street side of the building which was originally built at Covington's Montgomery Ward department store location.
The businesses were closed Friday morning.
A precise cause of the fire has not yet been determined as the investigation is still in the early stages. State investigators were also on the scene Friday.
This story will be updated when more information is learned.
