NKU Golfer Named A-Sun Player of the Week
Northern Kentucky University mens' golfer junior Clayton Portz has been named the Atlantic Sun Men's Golf Player of the Week after a strong showing at the Wright State Intercollegiate April 6-7 in Dayton, Ohio.
“Clayton played outstanding on a very tough course,” said mens' golf head coach Daryl Landrum. “He has become a good, solid and consistent player for us.”
After beginning the tournament with consecutive 2-over-par 73 rounds, Portz finished with a final round of 69 to propel five spots from a tie for seventh place into sole possession of second place. He ended just two strokes shy of topping the leaderboard after making up four strokes in the final round.
A native of Springfield, Ohio, Portz leads the Norse in scoring at 72.81 strokes per round. He joins Zach Wright as the only NKU golfer with a pair of top-10 finishes and fellow Norse Phoenix Ramsay with a top-5 showing this season.
This is the second weekly honor for an NKU golfer as Corey Raymond picked up the honors on October 10, 2012 after winning the Bearcat Invitational in a playoff.
The Norse will next travel to Nashville, Tennessee for the Big Blue Intercollegiate on April 13-14. Tennessee State University will host the event at Hermitage Golf Course. The event will serve as the final tune up for NKU before the team heads off to the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship from April 19-21.
