Warning: Man Accused of Impersonating Deputy, Making Calls
A man impersonating a Boone County Sheriff's Deputy has called at least six people as part of a scam, the sheriff's department warned on Saturday.
The suspect makes the call, claiming to have arrest warrants for the people receiving the calls, claiming that they must purchase two $500 debit cards (green cards) to avoid arrest. The calls took place on Friday and Saturday, the Boone County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
That man has used the name Deputy Marshall or Lieutenant Weaver during the calls and informed the targets that once the gift cards are activated, that he is to be called back to have read to him the number on the back of the card.
The Boone County Sheriff's Office said that they are not aware of anyone following through with the scammer's instructions, but encourages anyone contacted by the man to report it immediately. The scam artist has used the phone number, (859) 206-1812.
The Sheriff's Office asks that anyone with information as to the man's identity to call Crime Stoppers at (513) 352-3040 or the Boone County Sheriff's Office at (859) 334-2175.
