NKY High School Football Preview: Top Teams Hope to Make More Noise in 2015

Friday marks the beginning of the season for many local teams in Northern Kentucky, and the region as a whole hopes to put together another impressive showing as it did in last year’s state playoffs.

Highlands added another state championship to its rich football tradition last year with a thrilling game against Owensboro in the Class 4A championship game, 49-42.  The Bluebirds were stiffly challenged by Covington Catholic at home in the quarterfinal round, but emerged in that contest with a 37-34 victory. Highlands hopes to repeat as champions again in 2015 when they open their new season at Cooper on Friday night.

Newport Central Catholic began the season in their customary way, losing its first four games to bigger schools, but also customary was their hot streak down the stretch that saw the Thoroughbreds advance all the way to the Class 2A State Championship where they were blanked by DeSales 26-0. New Cath opens at Scott this year in what should be a telling game for both teams.

Dixie was another local team that found itself in the state championship game, but the Colonels were done in by Trinity 47-14 in the Class 6A title match. Dixie was propelled to the final game after an impressive shutout over Simon Kenton, 24-0, in the quarterfinals and decisive victory over Ballard 48-21 in the semis. The Colonels will look to replace the graduated quarterback Drew Moore who was a big reason for the team’s success a year ago.
