Cov Cath Introduces New Swimming & Diving Head Coaches

Covington Catholic High School has introduced new head coaches for the swimming and diving teams. Chris Goodpaster will be the swimming head coach and Katie McGonigal will be the diving coach.

Goodpaster graduated from CCH in 2004, before earning a degree in Business Management. This will be his fourth year coaching high school swimming. For the past three years, he has coached for Dixie Heights High School with Courtney Sorrell, who is now the Head Coach at Notre Dame Academy. During Goodpaster's tenure at Dixie, the boy’s team finished with three straight Regional Runner-up titles while the boys and girls earned a combined Regional Runner-Up title in 2015. In addition, two students earned individual Regional Championships. During Goodpaster’s three successful years with Dixie, the swimmers set a total of 11 new school records.

Goodpaster started swimming competitively at the age of four, swimming for current Beechwood High School swimming coach, Chris Konerman, at Tri-City YMCA. Goodpaster swam for Villa Madonna High School during junior high before transferring to Covington Catholic prior to his sophomore year. After a try at football, he returned to swimming his senior year and was a member of the 2004 State Runner-Up Team.

In addition to swimming, Goodpaster is involved in the local area’s Ultimate Frisbee programs. He co-founded, and has spent six years coaching NKY Ultimate, an Ultimate Frisbee club team made up of local high school students from area schools. During his time coaching NKY Ultimate, the team has won a State Championship and has had multiple State Runner-Up finishes. Goodpaster is also the Treasurer and an active Board of Directors member for the Cincinnati Ultimate Players Association. He was a key participant in CUPA’s organization of the 2014 USA Ultimate College National Tournament and the 2015 USA Ultimate U.S. Open Tournament.

Goodpaster currently works for Fifth Third Bank’s Commercial Division as a Client Advisor. He volunteers with the Young Bankers Club, an outreach program that works with underprivileged schools in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

McGonigal is a 1997 graduate of Notre Dame Academy. She was a varsity diver for NDA from 1993-1997 and coached the NDA diving team for the 2006-2007 season.  With two children, ages 8 and 4, she has remained active in diving as a meet judge. She works for Procter & Gamble in the Professional Oral Health Division as a Territory Manager.

“We are very excited and fortunate to have Coach Goodpaster and Coach McGonigal as the new leaders of the Colonel Swimming and Diving programs," said Athletic Director Tony Bacigalupo. "Their experience and passion will provide continued success for these tradition rich programs. At this time, we would also like to thank Richard Dickmann and Kevin Bodkin for their dedication and leadership of the teams.”

Coach Dickmann led the Aqua Colonels for seven seasons, earning seven Regional Titles and five State Runner-Up finishes.
