NKY High School Football Week 5 Preview & Top 5 Poll
Only one team in the RCN/NKYSports.com Top 5 Poll fell last week when Scott was edged by Conner at home, 28-27, in a shocking come-from-behind thriller. It was the first loss for the Eagles who had won their previous three games.
Top-ranked Simon Kenton was only five points short last week of scoring 50 points in every game this season in their demolishing of Dixie, 45-7.
The Pioneers look the part of a powerhouse and are unquestionably the strongest team in the region. SK has a quality opponent this week when Cooper comes to Independence. The Jaguars have only lost once this season and rolled over Campbell County, 35-7, last week. If Cooper emerges with the upset, they will likely soar up the rankings.
The focus, though, this week is on the undefeated teams. Simon Kenton is unblemished thus far, but so is second-ranked Ryle which smashed the struggling Highlands Bluebirds on the road last week.
The Raiders have benefited this year with terrific quarterback play from junior Tanner Morgan who has over 800 passing yards already this season. Ryle takes on a winless Campbell County team this week at home, followed by a home game against George Rogers Clark after their bye week.
Another team without a loss that has kind of flown under the radar thus far is the Beechwood Tigers. This week, Beechwood takes on their old Dixie Highway rival Covington Catholic who has had a miserable start to their season, losing all four of games so far. Last year, the Tigers stunned the Colonels at their place in a physical game where Beechwood was able to get to the quarterback on a regular basis. Safety/wide receiver Brett Slusher had a great game that day in all three phases and embodied the tough spirit the Tigers played with a season ago.
Beechwood coach Noel Rash approaches the game with a smash-mouth style of play that wins up front in the trenches. If Cov Cath wants to end their losing streak on Friday night, they must be ready for another tough, physical game from the Tigers.
Another smaller school making noise this season has been the surprising Bishop Brossart Mustangs who are a proud 4-0 nearing the halfway point to their season. Brossart is on a roll after trouncing Trimble County with a 40-0 shutout a week ago. They host Nicholas County this week and then travel to Ludlow for an intriguing small-school showdown the following week.
The Mustangs haven’t won four games in a season since 2010 and managed only one victory in 2014.
