NKY High School Football Week 8: What to Watch For on Friday
Things went as expected in Northern Kentucky high school football last week as the top five teams emerged unscathed. Many teams were on a bye week, but are back in action in Week 8.
Perhaps the most impressive victory came in Ludlow where visiting Bishop Brossart took care of the Panthers and is now 6-0. It was cold and rainy, but the Mustangs prevailed in a tough, physical game that was largely decided on a late-game fumble. Brossart travels to Bracken County (2-5) before going to Paris the following week in what should be a battle of the unbeaten.
Top-ranked Simon Kenton was off last week and takes on a winless Boone County on Friday where they should have no trouble earning their seventh win of the season. Since 2012, the Rebels are 2-36.
Ryle played last week and hammered a winless George Rogers Clark, 49-10, at home. The Raiders are 6-0 and cruising, though they have three tough games in a row beginning this week at Cooper. Following that match up, Ryle takes on Conner (5-1), and then heads to Simon Kenton in a game that many have circled as perhaps the best matchup of the year. If the Raiders can run that three-game gauntlet successfully, they would then in all likelihood become the top-ranked team in Northern Kentucky.
The Scott Eagles have now won three in a row and only have one loss on the season. Bourbon County (3-3) is next in line for the power running Eagles who look to use their strong rushing attack against the Colonels at home. Following that game is a road date with Holmes (2-4) before hosting top-ranked Simon Kenton in the regular season’s final week.
Conner is the last remaining team in the top five and has won four games in a row, including a nail biter at Lloyd last week, 6-0. The Cougars did not start out as one of best teams at the beginning of the year, but with wins over Scott and Newport Central Catholic, Conner has garnered attention. Conner’s only loss is to Simon Kenton so far.
