Week 9: NKY High School Football Preview
As the season winds down with three weeks left, the top ranking in the RCN Top-5 poll is Simon Kenton’s to lose.
The Pioneers have not been defeated so far in 2015, with their most recent victory coming at Boone County, 37-13, last week. SK takes on Campbell County this week. The Camels have yet to win a game and should not be a much of a test for the Pioneers, but after that, two tough teams await in Ryle and Scott to close out the regular season.
There is a new second-ranked team in the region after previously undefeated Ryle lost to Cooper last Friday night in a hard-nosed district game with a lot of injuries and a couple of huge second-half plays to tip the scales to the Jaguars favor.
Filling the number two slot is now the Scott Eagles whose only loss this season was by one point to Conner earlier in the year. Scott has won both of its district games thus far and will try again this week against a quality Bourbon County team in Taylor Mill on Friday night.
Moving up to third is Bishop Brossart, which improved its record to a still-perfect 7-0 after handling Bracken County, 37-0. This may be an unpopular ranking to some because there are bigger and perhaps more talented teams in the area, but a perfect record is as good as a school can do when playing through its schedule, and the Mustangs deserve the recognition for beating all of its opponents thus far. That perfection, however, will get not better test than traveling to play Paris this week who also has yet to lose. A Brossart win in that showdown should make an undefeated season a stark reality for the Mustangs and their faithful.
Listen as RCN's Bryan Burke and Michael Monks break down this week's games:
Ryle falls to fourth after the loss to Cooper last week. While Ryle was outplayed against the Jaguars, it was the Raiders' sole loss on the year and they still competed well in a tough game. The Raiders face another big challenge on Friday when they host Conner.
Conner has quietly amassed an impressive season, going 6-1 so far, with wins over Scott, Newport Central Catholic, and Lloyd. The only loss for the Cougars so far was to top-ranked Simon Kenton. If Conner beats Ryle on Friday, they would then most certainly move up the rankings, but for now, they stay put at fifth.
Cooper is just narrowly outside the top-5. With the Ryle win, they inched closer to crack the poll, but they still have two losses this year which, for now, keeps them out.
