NKY High School Football Week 10: Podcast, Preview, New Top 5

With only two more weeks of the regular football season, many postseason positions still lay in the balance.

Listen to RCN's Bryan Burke and Michael Monks preview Friday night's games:

Perhaps the most anticipated matchup this season will kick off on Friday night as undefeated Simon Kenton hosts one-loss Ryle in the big Class 6A showdown. The Pioneers scored more than 35 points in every game this season, but the Ryle offense can put up big numbers, too, having only been limited to under 30 points once this season, in their only loss.

Another important game among the big schools is Cooper at Conner. With a win, the Jaguars could win the district, having beaten Ryle and Conner in that event. If Conner can pull out the win, the Cougars would then be tied with the other two district rivals, each at 1-1.

Lloyd and Holy Cross also play a meaningful game on Friday as each try to lock down the second seed in the Class 2A District 6 standings. Lloyd is coming off a tough loss last week at Newport Central Catholic, but play at home against the Indians. Holy Cross is enjoying one of their better recent seasons at 4-4 and is coming off its most lopsided victory of the season, beating Newport on the road, 48-6. The winner will take second place in the district and the guarantee of a home playoff game.

Bellevue and Ludlow also lock horns on Friday to determine the second seed in that district. Bellevue was given an extra district game on its schedule after playing and beating Dayton twice, but Ludlow would have a better winning percentage with a win against the Tigers. Prior to their second win against Dayton last week, Bellevue had lost five straight games. If Ludlow stumbles at home against Bellevue, the Panthers will still find themselves on the road for the playoffs.

In Class 5A District 5, it’s a meaningful battle of the Colonels as Cov Cath travels up Dixie Highway to take on Dixie Heights to determine that district’s second place as well. Both teams have an overall. The two schools were in different districts a year ago where Dixie made a run all the way to the State final. That kind of streak seems unlikely for either team this year as each have fallen on a down year, but a win would help fuel more optimism heading into the season finale.
