Newport School Collects Nearly 500 Canned Goods During Halloween Food Drive

Members of the Newport Middle School Student Council collected 486 canned good and non-perishable food items during its Halloween night food drive.

Student council members collected food in the city's East Row neighborhood during Newport trick or treat.

"We want to thank all the staff and students that supported the Student Council Halloween Food Drive," said Allison Sherick, a middle school math teacher who co-sponsors the student council along with Sarah Reinhart, who assisted in organizing the food drive. "We collected almost 500 cans and non-perishable items that will be donated to families in our community."

Newport Independent Schools Superintendent Kelly Middleton said activities such as the Halloween Food Drive make him proud to be a part of the school system.

"The school and community spirit that is time and time again exhibited by our students, staff, parents and supporters is truly inspiring," Middleton said. "Thanks to our Middle School Student Council, families in Newport are getting a helping hand and a good meal."

Newport Middle School Student Council members are: Kennisha Williams, president; Brooklyn Rice, vice president; Danielle Ferguson, secretary; Shelby Powell; Zach Hughes; Alyssa Randall; Matthew Seiler; and Joey Sheffel.
