These 13 Covington Businesses Have a Shot at a CURB'D Parklet

On Monday night, CURB’D, a design-based competition being held in Covington, announced the names of the 13 businesses selected to participate in this year's project at an informational workshop at Braxton Brewing Co.

CURB'D, which is supported by the Carol Ann & Ralph V. Haile Jr./U.S. Bank Foundation, Renaissance Covington, and the MainStrasse Village Association, is aiming to bring parklets to downtown Covington in May 2016.

Local resident and People’s Liberty alumna Sam O’Connor will be coordinating the project, which follows a similar trajectory as the CoSign initiative launched in 2014.

Design teams will have the opportunity to submit proposals to local businesses for parklet construction with a final review by an external jury that will select the top five designs.

Applications for businesses wishing to participate were made available on Monday, October 26.

So, what is a parklet anyway? Parklets are a temporary use of a parking space within the public right of way that creates a more pedestrian-friendly environment and expands the sociallife of the street.

CURB’D aims to support local businesses by promoting walkability, connectivity, and placemaking. By attracting a more diverse group of Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati residents, CURB’D will showcase the region’s design talent through quasitemporary public installations.

Following the selection of the businesses, a “Call to Design Teams” was issued to local design talent. Design teams may choose to submit a design for any (or all) of the businesses selected. The local business will then choose their favorite design proposal for the next round. Before things get really crazy, businessowners and design teams will be required to attend a “Fabrication Workshop” where they’ll discuss logistics and feasibility. After completing this process, an esteemed panel of experts will review the submissions and select the top five proposals to move forward with fabrication.

Selected parklets will be installed in the downtown Covington and Mainstrasse area spring of 2016 and will be revealed to the public on May 6, 2016.

The list of 13 businesses selected are:
