Photos: Newport Police Shop with Kids

As Newport Police Officer John Dunn helped shepherd 22 children and their shopping buddy officers into the Newport Target store, he knew the children were excited to be able to buy things they really need this Christmas.

"I have organized the Shop with a Cop for the last 7 years, and the kids are always happy to come," Dunn said. "We have $200 to spend on each of them, and we like to have them spend about half of it on clothes and shoes, or coats, and the rest can be spent on toys."

The children are chosen from the Newport schools, primary and intermediate, so that the children range in age from 5 to 11. Once the kids finish shopping, they go back to the Police Department at 10th and Monmouth Streets to have lunch. Dunn said their major helpers are Jersey Mike's, Newport, and Papa John's, Southgate.
