Several Local Schools to Compete at National Cheerleading Competition
The Northern Kentucky Cheer & Dance Coaches Association, Inc. (NKCCA) held their annual competition on Saturday, January 30 at BB&T Arena on the campus of Northern Kentucky University. This year marked the 25th Anniversary of the competition. In addition to the anniversary, the association recently announced a partnership with Varsity, the largest cheerleading company in the world, to promote the new cheerleading sport, called STUNT.
The competition hosted nearly 100 local teams from Kentucky and Ohio, encompassing over 1,400 athletes. Proceeds from the competition were awarded in college scholarships based on academic performance, athletic ability, financial need, and essay submission. Previously, the NKCCA has awarded over $200,000 in college scholarships.
Ryle High School was the the High School Grand Champion, while Highlands won the Senior Stunt Group Division and Eastside Middle School (Mt. Washington) won the Middle School Grand Champion award.
Both Ryle and Eastside will travel to Orlando to compete in the UCA Nationals this weekend. Boone County High School, Dixie Heights High School, Cooper High School, Pendleton County High School and Simon Kenton High School will also compete at Disney.
