Florence Students Win Chance to Compete at World Finals
For the first time in the history of the program, AM Yealey Elementary school’s Odyssey of the Mind (OOTM) team has a chance to attend World Finals.
This year's event will be held from May 25-May 28 at Iowa State University.
Danielle Bramlage has been coaching the Odyssey of the Mind team at AM Yealey Elementary school for 10 years. During those 10 years, her teams have come close to placing 1st or 2nd at the state level competition and advancing to World Finals. Finally, after years of hard work, her team has accomplished their ultimate goal.
On Saturday, April 2, Yealey’ s Odyssey of the Mind team placed 1st in its division for its long-term problem/solution and their spontaneous scores along with seven other Boone County teams.
“We are still in shock," said Lainey Zdarsky, a 4th grade student and third-year OOTM member. "I cannot believe we finally did it!”
The Odyssey of the Mind program emphasizes creativity and teamwork and has grown into the largest international creative problem-solving competition worldwide. Millions of kids have been working hard all year perfecting their solutions to OOTM problems and competing within their regions and states. Only a few advance to World Finals.
In order to attend World Finals, the students are raising money to cover the $3,000 registration fee, room and board, food, and travel expenses. Those interested in helping out, can send donations to AM Yealy Elementary School, Attn: Odyssey of the Mind Team, 10 Yealey Dr. Florence, KY 41042.
