Housing Opportunities of Northern Kentucky (HONK) hosted an open house at its latest completed project - an attractive 3-bedroom, 2-bath house at 225 E. 20th Street in Covington.
HONK, a Covington-based non-profit organization, with generous financial support from The City of Covington’s HOME Program, BB&T, and The R.C. Durr Foundation, among others, just finished the residence and is offering it up for purchase.
“Our mission is about helping people transform their lives through homeownership,” said David Hastings, HONK’s Executive Director. “We do that by creating solid homeownership opportunities through the homes we build and rehab, and by providing significant support to the families we serve as they work toward becoming homeowners.”
Like most HONK projects, in addition to skilled local contractors and HONK’s own construction crew, volunteers from all walks of life contributed to the renovation. “Volunteers have played a critical role in HONK’s ability to make this home affordable,” Hastings said. “We are extremely grateful to all involved.”
A family has not yet been selected for 225 E. 20th Street. “Though our application process is still open, we expect this one to go quickly,” said Marcia Jennings, HONK’s Housing Counselor.
HONK is a faith-based, non-profit organization that has rehabbed 80 homes and built 33 homes in Northern Kentucky over the past 24 years, creating affordable homeownership opportunities for local families who otherwise would not be able to realize the dream of homeownership. Potential buyers have to either have the income and credit to support a mortgage right away or work to achieve it through HONK’s lease-purchase program, which allows them to save for a down payment, improve their credit, and get used to the utility costs and maintenance expectations in the home they are working to purchase.
This process usually takes about 18 months.
