Boone Republicans Call for Prosecutor's Resignation
Days after a judge awarded a new trial to a man convicted in a high-profile murder case, the Boone County Republican Party has called for the prosecutor's resignation.
Commonwealth's Attorney Linda Tally Smith, a Republican, had an extramarital affair with a detective who worked the case that ultimately led to the conviction of David Dolley in the 2012 murder of Michelle Mockbee in Florence. On Friday, Boone Circuit Judge James J.R. Schrand awarded a new trial to Dooley.
"Based on the recent ruling by Circuit Judge J.R. Schrand and related media coverage, it has become apparent that Linda Tally Smith has lost significant credibility in the legal community, and the people of Boone County have lost faith in the her ability to carry out her duties appropriately and effectively," the Boone County Republican Party said in a statement issued through chairman Josh Walton. "Therefore, the Boone County Republican Party calls for Linda Tally Smith to resign effective immediately, which will allow the justice system in our county to repair and heal."
On Friday, Boone County Judge/Executive Gary Moore, a Republican, also called for Tally Smith's resignation.
