Florence Restaurant Won't Show NFL Games Due to Protests
Call it a protest of a protest.
Smokin' This & That BBQ in Florence will no longer show NFL games.
Owner Gary Cummins said that the football players' choice to take a knee during the National Anthem as a protest against police brutality is disrespectful to the flag.
Cummins, a Marine veteran, posted his announcement to Facebook and said that until NFL players stand during the anthem, the games won't be shown.
"The flag not only represents the freedoms which we hold dearly in this country, but even more so the men and women who have lost their lives and those who are currently serving," Cummins said in a statement. "For an individual to take a knee during the National Anthem is disrespecting all of the men and women who fought for our great nation, plain and simple."
Cummins also used the hashtag #NoKneesInThisJoint.
Some NFL players recently opted to kneel during the National Anthem, a move started by quarterback Colin Kaepernick - who's currently without a team, as a protest against what they view as injustice amid a wave of deadly police shootings in which unarmed black men were killed.
