Distinguished Education Alumni Celebration to Honor STEM Teacher
Northern Kentucky University’s College of Education and Human Services will host its Second Annual Distinguished Alumni Celebration starting on Tuesday through Thursday. The celebration will honor Reeda Hart, who will deliver the keynote address on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in a program titled, Northern Kentucky: Begin at the Beginning.
Hart earned her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from NKU in 1976 and a master’s degree in education from Xavier University. She returned to NKU to receive her Rank 1 teaching certification. Although officially retired, Hart continues to use her 41 years of teaching experience to offer professional development around the region and beyond.
“Reeda brings an infectious excitement and enthusiasm about STEM education when teaching in classrooms and working with educators,” said Cynthia Reed, Dean of the College of Education and Human Services. “As part of her three-day residency, she will be co-teaching with three teachers in Campbell County schools, co-teach a graduate science education class, and provide insights on the importance of STEM education to a variety of stakeholders. This is how she wanted to celebrate her award – giving back to others.”
For the past seven years, Hart worked at the Center for Integrative Natural Science and Mathematics (CINSAM) at NKU. As CINSAM’s STEM Outreach Director, she founded and led the Next Generation STEM Classroom project. The program demonstrates a STEM lesson to a classroom of students with teachers from multiple grade levels observing. After this “Fishbowl” class, the teachers meet with CINSAM staff for a recap breakdown of the lesson. The program is embedded in 20 school districts across the region.
Hart has received many prestigious awards for her work in education, including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching, Kentucky Elementary Teacher of the Year and National Project Learning Tree’s Facilitator of the Year. The COEHS Second Annual Distinguished Alumni Celebration and Keynote Address will be held on October 24 at 12:15 p.m. at NKU’s University Center ballroom. Later that day, the presentation of her award and a reception in her honor will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the Student Union ballroom.
