Northern Kentucky Holds Off Oakland, Stays Unbeaten in Horizon League
In front of a national television audience, Northern Kentucky held off their hosts at Oakland Friday night, 87 to 83, to improve to 10-5 on the year and 3-0 in the Horizon League.
Trailing by as many as 12 in the first half, NKU fought back to take the lead early in the second and never looked back, holding back a late comeback by the Grizzlies (9-7, 1-2).
Carson Williams led the Norse with 21 points and 9 rebounds while Lavone Holland II added 19 points. Jeff Garrett scored 11 and Jordan Garnett added 10. Drew McDonald scored 8 and added 12 rebounds.
Oakland pulled within two, 81 to 79, with just 27 seconds left but the Norse hit all six of their free throws down the stretch to hold on to the win.
NKU shot 52.5 percent from the floor in handing Oakland its first home loss.
Northern Kentucky stays in Michigan for a Sunday afternoon game against Detroit Mercy. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
