Stoll Steps Down as Newport Catholic Girls Coach

George Stoll is stepping down after six seasons as head coach of the girls basketball team at Newport Central Catholic High School.

Stoll also spent four years at NCC as an assistant coach.

During his time at New Cath, the Thoroughbreds won a 9th Region title, one district championship, three All-A regional titles, three appearances in the All-A semifinals, and one appearance in the All-A championship game.

New Cath finished 11-18 this season and lost in the first round of the 9th Region tournament. The season followed a 12-17 campaign the year before.

No reason was given for Stoll's departure.

“It is with mixed emotions that I’ve decided to step down as the girls basketball coach at Newport Central Catholic," Stoll said in a statement. "New Cath has been, and always will be, home for me. I want to thank the administration at NCC for all of their constant support, especially (principal) Ron Dawn. I’ve been fortunate enough to coach in a situation to where I’ve been comfortable and appreciated, and I thank him for that. I also want to thank the girls I’ve had the pleasure of coaching over the past ten years as a Junior Varsity and Varsity coach. Hopefully, they’ve learned traits to help them throughout life to become better daughters, sisters, teammates, employees, wives, and mothers.”

“I am really sad to see George step down as the head coach but I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to have worked with him over the past two years," said NCC Athletic Director Jimmy Ryan. "He truly cares about the girls and their growth as basketball players and more importantly as young women.  He definitely made a positive difference and he will be missed.”

“We are losing a great basketball coach," said NCC Principal Ron Dawn added. "We thank Coach Stoll for his commitment to NCC and dedication to our students. George has built a solid girls basketball program and has been a great mentor for so many of our young ladies. He is a great teacher and motivator and we are glad he will continue at NCC in his teaching role.”

In 2014, Stoll was named Cincinnati Enquirer Coach of the Year. In 2015 and 2016, he was recognized as Division II Coach of the Year, and was 9th Region Coach of the Year in 2016.

In the 2013-14 season, Stoll led the Thoroughbreds to a 29-5 record, a 9th Region crown, and a trip to the Kentucky Sweet 16.

Newport Central Catholic officials said the process of hiring a new girls coach is underway.
