4-Year Old Dies in I-275 Crash
A 4-year old boy died in a car crash on I-275 eastbound at the Kenton-Campbell county line on Wednesday evening.
Initial reports indicated that the child was 3 years old, but in a news release sent late Thursday morning, Taylor Mill Police provided more details.
That department is investigating the crash with Kenton County Police's accident reconstruction team and the Campbell County Commonwealth's Attorney.
So far, official details include that Megan Ritter, of Kenton County, was driving on the highway when her car broke down and moved to the emergency lane of the 275 bridge over the Licking River.
A second vehicle, driven by Erin Weil, of Campbell County, was traveling in the right lane when she left her lane of travel because traffic had stopped. Weil's car hit Ritter's car, police said.
Dawson Elder, 4, died at the scene. Four others were taken to University Medical Center in Cincinnati or St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Fort Thomas.
The extent of those injuries is unknown.
Police are asking any witnesses to contact them as soon as possible.
Taylor Mill Police Chief Steve Knauf told WKRC that the stretch of high way is dangerous. "I've been here for 30 years and this stretch is one of the most dangerous stretches in our city," Knauf said. "You come down this area, and you probably don't know this, but you're coming down a bit of a grade. Naturally, you pick up speed, but on this bridge where this auto accident occurred, there's not much of a berm, so, stay in your car, put your seatbelt on, and dial 911."
He also said there was a car seat in the vehicle but it was unclear whether it had been buckled in.
Say a prayer for police & firefighters from Wilder and nearby agencies who responded to the tragic crash on 275 bridge tonight. Absolutely horrific scene that no one can “un-see”! Prayers for victims too.— Rob Sanders (@KYprosecutor) May 3, 2018
