Knife-Wielding Man Who Used Child as Shield Gets 10 Years
A man who wielded a knife near his 3-year old child and later used his 2-year old child as a shield, was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
On October 16, Elsmere Police responded to a home on Edwards Road after a woman reported that her boyfriend, Anthony Smith, 53, was possibly under the influence of methamphetamine and behaving violently.
Officers found Smith armed with a knife and standing behind the 3-year old.
That child was later rescued but as officers made entry into the home, Smith barricaded himself in a bathroom with the 2-year old. Officers repeatedly requested that Smith drop the knife or send out the child, but instead, Smith charged at officers while wielding the knife and using the child as a shield across his body.
Smith was arrested and the child was not injured.
He was found guilty of first degree wanton endangerment after a two-day trial in April, and last week was sentenced to 10 years in prison by Kenton Circuit Judge Patricia Summe.
