Kenton County Schools Won't Vote on New District Boundary Proposal
The Kenton County Board of Education will not vote on new boundaries for the county's schools, after all.
The Kenton County School District had considered new boundaries for its high and elementary schools, shifting a student population following the completion of renovation projects, according to a statement from Superintendent Henry Webb last month.
Some of the proposed changes included shifting more than 300 students from Simon Kenton High School to Scott High School, more than 90 students from Ryland Heights Elementary to Ft. Wright Elementary, nearly 50 students from Taylor Mill Elementary to Ft. Wright, more than 100 students from Ryland Heights to Taylor Mill, and 119 students from White's Tower Elementary to Ryland Heights.
In total, Simon Kenton would have seen 314 fewer students, all gained by Scott. Fort Wright would have gained 143 students and Taylor Mill would have added 61. Ryland Heights would have lost 85 students while White's Tower's student population would have been reduced by 119.
A survey was issued to the community for feedback.
Following a review of district data and details about proposed boundary changes, and a look at the feedback provided by the public through the survey and at board meetings, the proposal to change current school boundaries has been tabled indefinitely, the district announced Tuesday.
Instead, the district will recommend to the board a study of all district data for enrollment projections and facility usage by a third-party company, beginning in the spring of the upcoming school year. The study will also review the demographic trends within the school district to prepare projections for consideration for future decisions regarding boundary changes and facility usage.
The next facility plan is scheduled to be updated and approved during the 2020-21 school year, the district said in a statement. There will be multiple public hearings before the board considers the plan, the district said.
