Northern Kentucky Holds Off Northern Illinois, Enters Conferences Play at 10-3
Northern Kentucky held off Northern Illinois on Thursday night to earn its tenth victory of the season.
The Norse beat the Huskies for the second time this season, winning at BB&T Arena on Thursday, 65-62.
NKU is now 10-3 with Horizon League play set to begin next Friday. The 10-3 mark is NKU's best nonconference record since the program entered Division I play.
Drew McDonald came through with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead Northern Kentucky. Jalen Tate and Tyler Sharpe both added 14, while Dantez Walton put in 11 in the victory.
The Norse trailed at halftime and the game was tight late. With NKU leading 62-61, Tate made a layup with 16 seconds left to push the lead to three. Sharpe added a free throw later, and Northern Illinois hit only one of four free throw attempts in the final five seconds to give NKU the win.
Northern Kentucky starts Horizon League play and the defense of its regular season conference title from last year, when IUPUI comes to Highland Heights on Fri., Dec. 28 at 7 p.m.
