6,792 fans watched Northern Kentucky win its twentieth game for the third straight season on Saturday night at BB&T Arena in Highland Heights.
With the 79-64 homecoming night win over Oakland (11-15, 7-6), NKU improves to 20-6 on the season and 10-3 in the Horizon League. The Norse are currently in first place in the conference, one game ahead of Wright State (15-11, 9-4).
Drew McDonald led NKU with 21 points and 13 rebounds, his 12th "double-double" of the season.
Jalen Tate put in 19 points for the Norse while Dantez Walton added 15, and Tyler Sharpe scored 11.
The game was still close midway through the second half, with Northern Kentucky leading the Grizzlies, 52-47, with 10:57 to play. But a 9-0 run by NKU put the Norse up 14 with under eight minutes left. Oakland never got closer than 9-down again.
NKU only turned the ball over twice in the second half.
In addition to the regular-season record-breaking crowd, NKU improved to 15-0 at home this season, winning its nineteenth straight in Highland Heights in a stretch that dates back to last season.
NKU heads to Fairborn, Oh. for a date with second-place Wright State on Friday in a game that tips off at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
