Photos: Cov Cath, Beechwood Win, Will Meet in 9th Region Final
It took overtime for Beechwood to topple Cooper, 47-43, in the semifinals of the 9th Region boys basketball tournament.
The semis at BB&T Arena at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights featured the four teams with the best records in the competitive region.
Beechwood (29-5) faced a serious test from Cooper (25-6), as the Cougars were seeking to return to the Kentucky Sweet 16 for the first time since their deep run to the state finals in 2017.
Now, the Tigers will advance to face the defending champions of the 9th Region and the Sweet 16, Covington Catholic, which got past Newport 57-43.
Covington Catholic is now 26-7 on the season while Newport's run ends at 25-9.
Beechwood and Covington Catholic will take to the floor in the final at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Elsewhere, Campbell County (28-4) will take on George Rogers Clark (26-7) int he 10th Region final on Saturday night at Mason County. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
George Rogers Clark ended Scott's season in the semifinals on Friday night, 60-57, in overtime. The Eagles' season ends at 19-12.
In the Eighth Region, Walton-Verona easily advanced in the semifinals over Spencer County, 70-47. The Bearcats are now 26-6 on the season and will face Oldham County (20-13) in the finals on Saturday at Henry County. Tip-off is 7 p.m. Oldham County beat the region's top team, Gallatin Co., which had won its previous 15 games, 87-65, in the semis.
