9th Region Tournaments Set Attendance Records

Attendance at BB&T Arena in Highland Heights for the 9th Region boys and girls basketball tournaments set attendance records this year.

22,000 people attended the games between Feb. 25 and Mar. 4, a news release said.

In another first, many of the participating schools sold out their allotted number of tickets prior to the start of the tournament.

Covington Catholic won the boys' event while Ryle won the girls'. Ryle went on to win the state championship.

“BB&T is the greatest regional tournament venue in the state of Kentucky," said Covington Catholic boys basketball coach Scott Ruthsatz. "We are very fortunate to get an opportunity to play at such a great arena. Fans love watching games because there is not a bad seat in the arena. It’s a big time atmosphere and our teams over the years have relished in getting an opportunity to represent the 9th Region at Rupp Arena.”

“At BB&T Arena, I enjoyed the atmosphere and top of line accommodations that was provided. Playing on the big college floor was awesome,” said Ryle player Lauren Schwartz, who has committed to play college basketball at Rice University.

Next year’s KHSAA 9th Region Tournament is tentatively set for March 1 to March 9, 2020.
