KSO's Devou Park Series to Feature Popular Instrumentals
The Kentucky Symphony Orchestra's twenty-fifth anniversary summer in Devou park continues Saturday, August 3, with its newest subsidiary group, the K-so Combo.
"45s Without Words" starts at 7:30 p.m.
The show will feature lyric-less tunes that managed to sneak into the popular charts, even after the swing and big band eras had ended.
Together with a small string section and a couple extra sidemen, the K-so Combo offers up instrumental tunes that audiences will rarely hear performed live today. Many of these selections will be recognizable from their placement in advertisements (“Music to Watch Girls By” — Diet Pepsi) or from their link to sports and entertainment (“Love’s Theme” — ABC's coverage of professional golf, “Soul Bossa Nova”— Austin Powers film franchise, “Rise”— General Hospital).
“These instrumentals were certainly popular in their day, but they had lasting qualities that extended their play far beyond the Billboard charts,” said KSO Music Director James Cassidy.
Other songs to be featured include "The Hustle", "Green Onions", "Soul Sacrifice", "Hawaii 5-0", and "S.W.A.T.", and more.
The audience is permitted to bring picnic items, while food and drink will be available at the concession stand near the Devou Park Bandshell where the show will take place.
The TANK Shuttle from the Covington Catholic parking lot to the band shell runs from 6:00 -7:30 p.m (returning around 9:30 following the concert) for $1 each way. Bring blankets or lawn chairs. Free admission and parking, though donations are suggested.
