Local Police Return to I-75 for Special Patrol Over Weekend
Local police agencies begin their second highway safety traffic enforcement campaign on Friday.
Officers from Covington, Erlanger, Fort Mitchell, Kenton County, and Kentucky State Police will be joined by Commercial Vehicle Enforcement on Interstate 75 from the I-275 interchange in Erlanger to the Ohio River in Covington.
Operation Crash Reduction runs Friday through Monday (Columbus Day). During this time, law enforcement will run a high-visibility enforcement campaign, pulling over and ticketing drivers or passengers caught unbuckled.
This is the second coordinated effort after the agencies were awarded funds from a federal grant. Earlier this month, the patrol issued 281 citations along the targeted I-75 corridor.
The I-75 Corridor Grant pays overtime for officers to patrol the interstate all year, various hours of the day and night. Periodically, there will be special enforcement campaigns, which is the case for Columbus Day weekend.
From 2013-2017, Columbus Day was the second deadliest holiday of 2017 for this region, trailing only Independence Day in Kentucky.
