102 Trees to Be Planted in Newport

The Tree Revitalize Program in Newport received a $10,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation and a tree-planting date has been set for Saturday, October 19.

The East Row Garden Club is sponsoring the event that will result in 102 tree to be planted.

Volunteers will meet at St. John's United Church at Park Avenue and Nelson Place at 8:30 a.m. for a continental breakfast and training session on the proper way to plant trees.

Groups of four will plant the trees.

A portion of the funds awarded by Duke will be used to replace some of the 100 ash trees in the city, many on Washington Avenue, that have been destroyed by the emerald ash borer.

More than 400 trees have been planted throughout Newport thanks to the Tree Revitalize Program, a news release said.

Representatives from Duke will be on hand at the planting to present the check to the garden club.
