New Wedding Design Firm Opens in Downtown Covington
A new wedding design firm is open in Covington.
OKOTA celebrated its grand opening at 266 Pike Street with a ribbon-cutting on Friday, along with partners from Stockyard Bank, the Catalytic Fund, and the City of Covington.
The space was previously occupied by a bar.
OKOTA is owned by Abbie Guthier, who, with her husband, Kris, and father, Joe Kinnet, hand-scraped and repainted the original tin ceiling. Plaster was removed from the interior walls exposing historic brick, new flooring was installed, and crystal chandeliers were hung.
Services offered by OKOTA include events planning, photography, floral and invitation design, dessert bar consultation, videography, and coordination of wedding day.
The name OKOTA and its turtle imagery in the branding is derived from a service trip to the Lakota Reservation in South Dakota, Guthier said.
“The tribe tells a creation story from which turtles have come to represent a strong foundation, wisdom and longevity,” she said.
Guthier added that “a couple’s wedding day is the foundation of their life together” - and that the name and symbol capture her hopes for her clients.
Guthier said that he has long been drawn to the positive energy of the urban atmosphere in the River Cities. Many of her clients live or work in the area.
