In Double Overtime Loss, NKU Gives Texas Southern First Win

Northern Kentucky's three-game winning streak was snapped in a double overtime loss at BB&T Arena late Saturday night.

Texas Southern earned its first win of the season as the Norse came up short, 98-96.

Dantez Walton turned in a career-high 33 points, including six three-pointers, for Northern Kentucky (4-2). Trevon Faulkner added 24, also a career-high, while Tyler Sharpe put in 14 and Silas Adheke scored 12.

The game was back-and-forth throughout with the Tigers leading NKU, 32-31 at halftime.

Texas Southern added some cushion in the second half, pulling away, 44-38, before Faulkner and Adheke each scored to keep NKU within striking distance. When the game paused for the media break at the under-12-minute mark, Texas Southern led 49-47.

Faulkner and Walton came out of the break on fire, scoring a combined 31 points over twelve minutes and NKU took a 73-67 lead with 1:03 left to play.

A late three from Texas Southern tied the game at 77 at the end of regulation.

In the first overtime, the teams traded blocking fouls and made free throws to keep the game tied at 79 with 3:55 to play.

NKU started to pull away again with three consecutive three-point baskets, with one from Bryant Mocaby and two from Walton, including one that was turned into a four-point play after a foul shot.

Though NKU had built an 89-83 lead, the Tigers came back and tied the game at the free throw line to send it into double overtime.

Texas Southern took a quick lead, 93-91, but Mocaby got back on the board again to tie the game.

The game was tied at 96 with 16 seconds to play but the Tigers' Tyrik Armstrong netted a layup with six seconds left.

The Norse had no last-second answer.

Walton's 33 points in the game was the first time a Norse player scored more than 30 since Jalen Tate did it with 30 points on March 2. Over the past three games, Walton is averaging 25 points and 8.3 rebounds.

NKU had two players with more than 20 points in two straight games.

Northern Kentucky looks to add another to the win column on Monday at 7 p.m. when Midway visits BB&T Arena.
