NKU Battles Arkansas to the End but Falls, 66-60
Northern Kentucky fell in Fayetteville on Saturday night where the Arkansas Razorbacks held off the feisty Norse, 66-60.
The match was NKU's second this season against an SEC foe. The Norse fell to Missouri, 71-56, in early November.
Dantez Walton led Northern Kentucky (5-3) with 30 points but it wasn't enough for an upset of undefeated Arkansas (7-0).
Walton has scored 30 points in two of the last three games for NKU.
Trevon Faulkner added 14 while Tyler Sharpe put in 10 points.
The Norse had some late opportunities to win, but missed a pair of free throws in the final 14 seconds. Arkansas made four free throws in the closing moments to seal the win.
Early in the game, things were going NKU's way as the Norse pulled out to a 13-4 lead. NKU led 28-23 with just over four minutes to play in the first half, but the Razorbacks scored the last ten points of the half to lead at the break, 33-28.
The Norse were able to keep it close in the second half even after falling behind by ten and then twelve points at two different points.
NKU scored eight straight unanswered points to cut the lead to four.
Then, trailing 61-56 with 2:45 to play in the game, Walton brought the Norse within one by scoring four unanswered points.
Arkansas led 61-60 with 23 seconds to play.
The Razorbacks made a free throw and then NKU's Adham Eleeda saw a nice look from the corner but his shot rimmed out. Arkansas made another pair of free throws to push the lead to four.
Faulkner threw up a three but it rimmed out, and the Razorbacks closed out the game with another pair of free throws.
Next up for the Norse is a trip north on U.S. 27 to Oxford, Ohio for a Tuesday night date with the Miami Redhawks. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
